Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative

The Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative (PSFPI) supports the principle aim of the Government’s Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food to secure a sustainable, world-class farming and food sector that contributes to a better environment and healthy and prosperous communities.

Priority PSFPI Objectives

  • promoting food safety, including high standards of hygiene
  • increasing the consumption of healthy and nutritious food
  • improving the sustainability and efficiency of production, processing and distribution
  • increase tenders from small and local producers and their ability to do business
  • increasing co-operation among buyers, suppliers and along the supply chain
  • improving sustainability and efficiency of food procurement and catering services

The Benefits Include:

  • more sustainable UK rural local economies
  • more competitive small and medium sized suppliers
  • improved animal welfare
  • healthier and better performing students and workforce
  • a more sustainable environment
  • reduced hospital stays

PSFPI and the Government Office for the West Midlands

We work with government departments, industry, local authorities, regional agencies and other stakeholders to take forward regional activity to achieve the objectives of the PSFPI.

PSFPI and Advantage West Midlands (AWM)

We work with AWM through their Food Partnership and Rural Policy teams, both of which are part of the West Midlands Delivery Structure for the Government's Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food, which supports the PSFPI.

PSFPI and the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP)

This collaboration with the RIEP brings together local authority procurement officers to explore ways to save money in food procurement and increase opportunities for local supplies.
