The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) champions good quality service for tourists, from both the UK and overseas. The Department encourages and helps the tourism industry to improve what it has to offer, with Government Offices supporting tourism initiatives to maintain the health of the tourism industry in each region.

The West Midlands tourism industry encompasses 28,000 businesses which provide employment for 305,000 people and brings business worth £4.8 billion per year. There were 124 visits to the region in 2001.
Advantage West Midlands has strategic responsibility for tourism on the region. The role of tourism partners is set out in the visitor Economy Strategy, which can be found on the AWM website, and Tourism West Midlands was established to guide delivery of the strategy.
