Trudi Elliott, Regional Director GOWM also acts as the lead regional
director for the Government Office network on DCMS issues.
We provide a regional focus for DCMS policies on sport, arts, museums and
galleries, libraries and archives, heritage and architecture, the creative
industries (music, film and broadcasting), tourism, the lottery, licensing
and gambling.
DCMS supports and promotes the widest access to excellence in culture - in
the arts, in museums and galleries, in architecture and in the built and
the historic environment, and libraries. We provide support to DCMS
in this.
We also work to increase understanding of how creative industries and
tourism can contribute much to regeneration and economic development, with
an emphasis on neighbourhood renewal, education and health.
We help promote DCMS Strategic Objectives. For 2008-2011, these are:
• Opportunity: Encourage more widespread enjoyment of culture,
media and sport
• Excellence: Support talent and excellence in culture, media and
sport
• Economic impact: Realise the economic benefits of the
Department’s sectors
• Olympics: Deliver a successful and inspirational Olympic and
Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy
This involves close working with the cultural non-departmental public
bodies in the English regions and partnership working with a range of
regional bodies, including Advantage West Midlands (AWM) - the Regional
Development Agency, local authorities, the voluntary sector and private
organisations, taking a cross-departmental approach to
ensure cohesion of policy delivery.
We also work to promote and integrate the culture agenda in the work of
Local Authorities and Local Strategic Partnerships, and major regional
strategies such as the Regional Economic Strategy and Regional Spatial
Strategy, and the new Single Regional Strategy.
Working Together
A booklet (see below) has been published by the Department of Culture,
Media and Sport (DCMS). It gives a useful summary of what it
does, who it works with, and why. Although aimed at local councillors it
will interest anyone wanting to know more about DCMS. DCMS have also
recently published a new leaflet entitled 'DCMS - About Us' which is also
available to view or upload via the related documents below.
